Tweed pilling and abrasion: separate the testing questions

Set wear-testing questions relevant to the garment.

Specify the assessment question.

Pilling and abrasion are different requirements.

Pilling concerns the formation and appearance of surface fibre balls, while abrasion concerns wear under a specified assessment. One result is not a substitute for the other. Define the garment use and ask the responsible laboratory which method applies.

Identify the actual test sample.

Raised or textured yarn appearance cannot predict a grade. Connect the test request to the exact fabric, specimen, method, conditions and agreed acceptance requirement. Do not select a universal cycle count from a generic guide.

Keep the report interpretable.

Request a report identifying the reference and assessment scope. If the yarn, finish or construction changes, ask whether the evidence remains applicable. This page prepares a test discussion, not a procedure for running a standard.

Consult the primary method source.

ISO publishes the ISO 12945 series for pilling assessment. Use the current official method information with a competent laboratory; the method selection and programme requirements need article-specific review.

  • Exposure or process to assess
  • Actual reference and colourway
  • Method to agree with the laboratory
  • Programme-specific acceptance requirement
  • Report identity and open actions

Solve the next buying problem.

Are pilling and abrasion the same problem?

No. Surface pills, fuzzing and matting concern changes in surface appearance; abrasion review concerns wear under a defined assessment. Ask which problem matters for the garment and agree the method and acceptance requirements for the exact article. One result should not be presented as proof of the other.

What can ISO 12945-2 tell a buyer?

Its published scope concerns assessment of propensity to surface pilling, fuzzing or matting using the modified Martindale method. The standard name is a method reference, not a claim that a Fred fabric has passed. Ask the laboratory and responsible buyer to confirm method, conditions, reporting and acceptance criteria before using an article-specific result.
