The decision to make.
Prioritise the joins that affect the design.
Perfect alignment at every seam is not a single default instruction. Mark the important points on the actual sketch: fronts, pockets, centre back, sleeve transitions or a garment-set relationship.
Use the right reference.
Record the repeat and intended direction. Asymmetric grids and stripe sequences can need orientation control as well as matching. Keep a wider view and physical scale evidence with the cutting brief.
Bring it to the garment task.
Have the cutter assess usable width, size range and matching rules on the actual marker. There is no universal extra consumption percentage that applies to every garment and repeat.
Produce a usable record.
Separate required matches from preferred and non-critical areas. Use a prototype or panel review to resolve the design priorities before treating the cloth quantity as final.
A worksheet for the next decision.
Scroll the table horizontally on small screens.
| Decision | Record in the brief | Resolve with evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Reference | Exact sample, version and intended face | Physical sample identity |
| Observation | What was seen, measured or trialled | Relevant reference or assessment |
| Requirement | Fixed points versus targets | Agreed brief and actual specification |
| Next step | Specific unresolved decision | Named sample or review task |
Keep these points with the reference.
- Sample identity and version
- Garment and purpose of review
- Relevant measurements with units
- Physical or documentary evidence
- Accepted points and open questions
- Next action and responsible party

How do I reduce waste while preserving a matched check?
Define which joins are essential to the design, which are preferred and which can be relaxed. Include complete repeat measurements and any one-way direction. Ask the cutting team to compare feasible markers with the actual usable width and size distribution. Let the design priorities guide the estimate.
Why is a universal matching allowance unreliable?
Repeat, panel size, usable width, orientation and matching rules all influence the layout. A percentage borrowed from another garment can misstate this project. Request a marker-based estimate and identify which matching decisions it assumes before discussing quantity.
