The decision to make.
Develop care instructions from the actual garment.
A tweed label does not establish one universal washing or cleaning method. Fibre content, finish, colour, lining, interfacing and trims need to be considered together.
Use the right reference.
Identify the intended care route during development. Ask the responsible garment team and relevant laboratory what trials are needed for the exact construction and market requirements.
Bring it to the garment task.
Keep fabric dimensional and colour observations separate from the assembled-garment outcome. A cloth test does not automatically approve a lining, fastener or bonded component.
Produce a usable record.
Document the sample version, process assessed and decisions still open. Do not issue consumer care instructions from a photograph or an unverified generic guide.
A worksheet for the next decision.
Scroll the table horizontally on small screens.
| Decision | Record in the brief | Resolve with evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Reference | Exact sample, version and intended face | Physical sample identity |
| Observation | What was seen, measured or trialled | Relevant reference or assessment |
| Requirement | Fixed points versus targets | Agreed brief and actual specification |
| Next step | Specific unresolved decision | Named sample or review task |
Keep these points with the reference.
- Sample identity and version
- Garment and purpose of review
- Relevant measurements with units
- Physical or documentary evidence
- Accepted points and open questions
- Next action and responsible party

Can I decide tweed care from the fibre label alone?
The whole garment also includes colour, finish, lining, support and trims. Define the intended care outcome during development and ask the responsible garment team to assess the actual assembly. Do not assign a consumer care label from a website photograph or a general fabric category.
What if care is still undecided when sampling starts?
Mark it as an open requirement and decide which trial or assessment will resolve it. Keep the proposed process, sample version and result together. Any change to cloth or assembly should trigger a review of whether the previous conclusion still applies.
